Members of The Chamber Fully Participated in Recently Held DC Elections

The Chamber’s members actively participated in voting on the polling day of the new District Council (DC) elections successfully held recently. The Chamber would like to congratulate the 264 newly elected DC members and trusts that they will be able to shoulder the heavy responsibilities of district governance, live up to the support of all sectors of society and the expectations of voters, and function well as a bridge between the government and the public, thus writing a new chapter of good governance in Hong Kong. Jonathan Choi, the Chamber’s Chairman, pointed out that the elections were Hong Kong’s first DC elections under its improved electoral system. More than one million voters cast their votes, and the process was lawful and orderly, fully demonstrating the superiority of the new electoral system and reflecting the public’s firm support for the new electoral system and improvement of district governance. The DC elections attracted patriotic and Hong Kong-loving knowledgeable people with different backgrounds, professions and aspirations to serve the districts to stand for election. This presented an upright and honourable electoral culture, thereby further laying a solid foundation for the steady and long-term implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle in Hong Kong.

Prior to the polling day, the Chamber set up street stands outside the ground floor lobby of the CGCC Building for five consecutive days to distribute leaflets to call on the public to vote actively. Many of the Chamber’s members, including office bearers, committee members and members of the various District Liaison Groups also participated in the publicity campaign during this period. (4-8/12)
